WYNDHAM

       .....

                       Back to the Regional map

Wyndham was originally established in 1886 as a result of the gold rush to Halls Creek further to the south. In its heyday it boasted of six thriving pubs and its location in Cambridge Gulf provided an excellent port facility for the region. In more recent times it was the centre of a large meat works used to process the cattle of the Kimberley. Nowadays most cattle are transported south by road and thus it is no longer operational.

The port is still used and there is increasing interest in utilising it for live cattle exports to the nearby Asian countries. As the Ord Valley agriculture industry grows it is envisaged produce will be transported from here also as is the case with the developing sugar industry.

Wyndham's population is now about 850 and the town remains a small frontier style centre typical of the character of the Kimberley - unpretentious and friendly, but proud of its heritage.
