Counselling Program

The Kimberley Division of General Practice (KDGP) Counselling Program provides services to communities in the Kimberley Region.

The service has a focus on primary care of mild to moderate mental health issues using evidence based focused psychological interventions. It also focused on community capacity building in the area of mental health.

An integral part of our program is to provide support by regular visits, community consultation and the provision of peer support and resources for practitioners working in the community.

KDGP Counselling Team is staffed by professionals who are qualified for work in mental health and psychological issues. Services can be delivered to individuals or to groups.

Interventions

The team offers a range of evidence based treatments to help people with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety and Phobias
  • Panic Disorders
  • Anger Management
  • Stress Management
  • Grief and Trauma
  • Social and emotional wellbeing issues
  • Other mental health issues

In most cases 6 sessions are offered and then the situation is reviewed. If suitable a further six sessions may be offered.

  • Debriefing and peer support
  • Community Capacity Building
  • Psycho-educational workshops

Criteria for Service: 

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Capacity to engage in and benefit from short-term therapy
  •  Ability to attend structured appointments
  • Are not requiring court reports or reports for workers compensation claims
  • Non-mandated clients only
  • Acute psychological services or crisis response services are generally not provided by our program

Who may refer

Where appropriate, we recommend that clients first consult their GP to facilitate a referral to our service.

Referrals from agencies are also considered. A referral form is attached.
